Dylan Drazen @Paradisco, 5.19.13

We are currently experiencing a time in NYC where great music is once again becoming the focus of gay nightlife events and we couldn’t be more thrilled. Over the past decade, as pop music took over the majority of the gay scene, some of the best talent in the city either adapted their musical approach to nightlife in order to survive or simply moved away from the Big Apple. One person who took the latter path is NYC-born Dylan Drazen, and it’s about time to bring this incredible DJ back to his hometown for an afternoon of beautiful disco and house music at Paradisco. Make sure to RSVP on our event page and invite your favorite music-loving friends.

Originally from Manhattan and later raised on Long Island, Drazen discovered his love for music at an early age as he quickly immersed himself into the R&B and rap world, only to transition to disco, house and deep house in the 90′s. Even though he established his career over the years as a renowned techno DJ, with regular gigs in Spain, Japan and several countries in South America, Drazen’s heart still lives in soulful, uplifting house music. While in NYC, Drazen played at several legendary clubs, including Limelight, Tunnel, Twilo, Vinyl and Love. His masterfully curated Barbecue mixtape series showcases his tasteful New York-inspired house aesthetic at its best, and although it was released over 10 years ago, it never fails to make us feel happy and in the mood for dancing.

Drazen currently lives in Florida and has recently made his Miami debut at Spazio, where he has had the opportunity to showcase his more modern house sound. Expect a brand new atmosphere at Paradisco as Dylan Drazen spins his special selection of current tracks and all-time house classics for an afternoon of dancing under the sun.

Plastic Plates

While a lot of great music seems to come from Australia, Plastic Plates–the alias of Sydney’s Felix Bloxsom–is probably our favorite musical discovery from the land down under. The producer and DJ has wowed us with his remixes, original songs and various live sets in the past and we’re excited and honored to be the first to feature him at a gay party in NYC at this Sunday’s extra special edition of Paradisco. Learn more about our favorite Aussie with our exclusive Spotlight interview below.

OXD: What inspired you to become a DJ?
PP: Hanging out too much in nightclubs! But, seriously though, it was just another extension of music. Especially once I started producing dance music, it goes hand in hand… I probably wouldn’t be doing so much of it if I wasn’t a producer.
OXD: What’s your favorite venue in NYC currently?
PP: I’d say Le Bain… Output has an amazing system too but Le Bain is always fun. Good sound system, hot tub (I’ve never been in it) and the best view while you use the loo!
“In my experience I’ve always gravitated to parties where there’s a mix of everybody and if it’s happening more and more then THANK GOODNESS!”
OXD: Who is the DJ you admire the most?
PP: There are so many for different reasons but my friends back in Oz who I learned from are definitely on the list: the late great Ajax, Gus Hoodrat, Black Angus. The most fun dancing for me in recent memory was the dynamic residency at Sankeys in Ibiza for a few weeks last summer (Solomun, Hosh, David August etc.).
OXD: We live in a time where gay house and disco fans like ourselves are going to non gay venues to discover fresh and new music. What do you think this means for the future of NYC’s nightlife?
PP: In my experience I’ve always gravitated to parties where there’s a mix of everybody and if it’s happening more and more then THANK GOODNESS!
OXD: Finally, What are your top 5 tracks at the moment?
1. Stuffa: ‘Keep On’

2. Box Of Wolves and Christa Vi: ‘Boy (Cyclist Remix)’

3. Touch Sensitive: ‘Show Me’

4. Sono: ‘Keep Control (Chopstick and Johnjon remix)’

5. Jessie Ware: ‘Imagine It Was Us’

Plastic Plates @Paradisco, 5.12.13

Plastic Plates’ various NYC appearances have always been on our radar since OXD’s inception. His set at Le Poisson Rouge during Pride weekend last year was one our most memorable OXD events and since then we have also had amazing nights listening to him at Tamanny Hall, The DL and most recently, Output, our new favorite NYC venue. We’re proud to have played our part in helping Plastic Plates become a known name to gay New Yorkers, and are incredibly excited to announce that the man himself will be our guest DJ at this Sunday’s extra special edition of Paradisco.

Plastic Plates is the alias of Felix Bloxsom, who originally hails from Sydney, Australia, and is now based in Los Angeles. Plastic Plates’ distinct synth-y disco sound has attracted both indie, dance and mainstream pop artists to commission remixes from him. These artists include Adele, Sia, Body Language, The Presets, Sam Sparro, The Human League, Sneaky Sound System, The Magician, Katy Perry, Mark Ronson and more. 2012 saw the release of Plastic Plates’ debut EP Things I didn’t Know I Loved on french tastemaker record label Kitsuné.

Following last Sunday’s epic edition with Tim Sweeney, we are once again incredibly honored to showcase an artist we respect so much at our Paradisco. Check out his latest mixtape below, a hint of what’s to come this weekend. RSVP on our Facebook event page and spread the word for another afternoon full of great house music, serious dancing and friendly faces.

Tim Sweeney

From working an odd hours late night college radio show to now touring the globe and maintaining his own record label, Tim Sweeney is a true story of homegrown success. Sweeney started the world-famous show Beats In Space Radio in 1999 while still a student at NYU and it continues to air every Tuesday 14 years later. The show grew steadily overtime and his success soon parlayed into working with DFA records, scoring the soundtrack for various video game releases and even starting his own label, which shares the same name as his radio show, Beats In Space. Sweeney is a massive talent and we are over the moon to be featuring him at Paradisco this Sunday, May 5th. Check out the exclusive interview below and come celebrate Cinco de Mayo with his forward-thinking brand of daytime music at the Great Lawn at THE OUT NYC.

OXD: What inspired you to become a DJ?
TIM: It was going out to raves as a teenager in Baltimore and just seeing everyone dancing in what felt like another world. After seeing and feeling that, I just wanted to do it all the time!
OXD: What’s your favorite venue in NYC currently?
TIM: David Mancuso’s Loft Parties. He does these over on 2nd Avenue near Veselka. You can tell how much effort is put into each one of his parties with the sound, the lights, the balloons, the food and most importantly, the amazing people who show up.
“I hope we get more mixed parties. That’s what it’s all about for me. You need all kinds of people to make a party really go off and I think that’s what we all want.”
OXD: Who is the DJ you admire the most?
TIM: I admire David Mancuso, Optimo, Prosumer, Harvey, Horse Meat Disco, Jeff Mills, Andrew Weatherall, etc… a lot of people! But it’s people who push things and have original ideas. I get bored listening to the same thing all the time.
OXD: We live in a time where gay house and disco fans like ourselves are going to non gay venues to discover fresh and new music. What do you think this means for the future of NYC’s nightlife?
TIM: I hope we get more mixed parties. That’s what it’s all about for me. You need all kinds of people to make a party really go off and I think that’s what we all want… a party! Open minded people, great music and the party will follow.
OXD: Finally, What are your top 5 tracks at the moment?
1. Amor (Selvagem Edit) – B.I.S. Records, Inc

2. Matthew Dear: ‘Fighting is Futile (KiNK Remix)’ [Ghostly] Listen

3. Dimitri From Tokyo: ‘French Affair (Dimitri From Tokyo Edit)’ [Disco Deviance]

4. Joey Newman: ‘The One You Love’

5. Manhooker: ‘Club Anonymous (Roctiv Extended Club Mix)’

Tim Sweeney @Paradisco, 5.5.13

Paradisco has showcased many talented DJs whose names are familiar to a large portion of our audience, mostly through their residencies at revered parties in the NYC underground gay scene. Although our next guest may not be as quite known amongst the gays (apart from the ones who are music savvy), he is beyond huge in the global house music scene and will take our beloved Sunday tea dance to an even higher level. To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, we invited the one and only Tim Sweeney to take over the decks and have us dancing the afternoon away with his edgy, ground-breaking house music style. RSVP on Facebook and spread the word to your music-loving friends.

Tim Sweeney is the man behind Beats In Space, one of the world’s most famous and respected dance music radio shows, which airs every Tuesday on WNYU 89.1 FM in NYC. Over the course of 10 years of BIS, Sweeney has featured the majority of DJs and producers we admire at OXD, including Todd Terje, Lindstrøm, The Juan Maclean, Holy Ghost!, Joakim, Horse Meat Disco, Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs and Prins Thomas, to name a few. With so many key figures making appearances on his show, BIS has become a trend-setting stage for the newest and best dance music currently being produced in the world.

Since 2009, Beats In Space has ventured in the record label business and put out releases by the likes of Tensnake, Paradis and other up and coming artists. The most recent of these is the brand new LP by Secret Circuit, entitled Tactile Galactics.

In addition to his extensive career, Sweeney was part of the DFA Records family through the early 2000′s and toured alongside LCD Soundsystem’s James Murphy and Pat Mahoney. Sweeney also created compilations for the label which included Compilation #2 (2004), the DFA Holiday Mix 2005, and A DFA Compilation for the Chanel Mobile Art New York Party (2008). Sweeney has even scored music for games, like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, as well as produced original tracks of his own and scratched records for Hercules & Love Affair.

Needless to say, we look forward to featuring one of the biggest and most important names in house music in NYC (and the world) at Paradisco. Don’t miss our exclusive interview with Tim Sweeney in our Spotlight feature.
