Jonas Rathsman, Perseus and Moon Boots @Output, 7.11.13

French Express has become one of the biggest nu-disco and house labels in the industry. Unphased by the ups and downs and “hype” that the music business brings along with it, their mission is simply to put out great music and get people dancing. Three of French Expres’ biggest artists, Jonas Rathsman, Perseus (the label’s founder) and Moon Boots are teaming up for a night of great music at Output on Thursday, July 11th and we’re ecstatic to for this stellar line up.

Jonas Rathsman grew up in a small village in Western Sweden, far away from the disco lights and clubs that now have become an integral part of his life. His debut EP Tobago was released in late 2011, and followed up with the singles ‘Since I Don’t Have You’, ‘W4W’ and his latest, ‘Bringing You Down’. His tracks are notable for their prominent featuring of soulful vocals and very classic house sound. Rathsman’s creative streak isn’t limited to only music – he is also the co-owner and producer behind the fashion brand Uniforms for the Dedicated.

Perseus is known for his tropical, beach-friendly production, going as far to describe the genre of his music as “euphoria”. He has a particular knack for taking pop and R&B songs from popular radio’s past and breathing a new life into them, like on his 2011 Russian Girlfriends EP and last summer’s Seychelles/Zanzibar EP. He has also done remixes for artists like Mark Ronson and Jeremy Glenn. Perseus was really at the forefront of the tropical-house trend of 2012, and we’re hoping he has more up his sleeve for this summer.

With remixes for the likes of Little Boots, Jonas Rathsman and Bondax under his belt in the past year, Moon Boots also has made some outstanding original tracks including his most recent, ‘Love Strong.’ His style is decidedly nu-disco, favoring pulsing bass lines, funky synths and bold vocals. Every time we have seen him DJ, he commands the DJ booth and manages to get the entire club dancing, and we’re sure his set at Output will not disappoint.

The Ru-Mix – Perfect Summer Day II: ‘Sugar Boat Disco’

Part II of the ‘Perfect Summer Day’ series, ‘Sugar Boat Disco’ showcases the emerging trend of R&B hits from yesterday being refashioned into Balearic disco & house tracks. There are a few artists that have pretty much cornered the market on this (almost all of them from one of our favorite labels, French Express) so this mix consistently delivers a great, chilled-out vibe. With its tropical disco sound, these nostalgia driven tracks are best enjoyed poolside or at the beach, preferably with some friends to partake in the revelry. Keep the cocktails flowing as Part III, which is coming tomorrow, will keep the party going as you dance under the setting sun.

Le Youth: ‘Dance With Me’

L.A. based Le Youth (Wes James) has joined the tropical-meets-90′s-R&B buzz with a great new track, ‘Dance With Me,’ which features lyrics from TLC’s hit ‘No Scrubs.’ The song is in line with fellow producer Perseus, who has been leading the way with slowed down, steel-drum infused reimaginations of existing pop songs. ‘Dance With Me’ comes shortly after the release of Le Youth’s remix for The Hint’s ‘+1, -1,’ which is still in heavy rotation at OXD headquarters, and is available for free below.

Perseus: ‘Love in Zanzibar’

We have been following up with Perseus since his fantastic “Summer of 83″ remix for Jeremy Glenn’s ‘New Life‘ and so far every track he releases has been a gem. In little time, Perseus managed to establish a very particular tropical-flavored house music style that we fell in love with right away. His work mixes up steel drums melodies, slower beats and sample vocals by R&B artists such as Ashanti and Mary J. Blige— the latter featured on Perseus’ newest track, ‘Love in Zanzibar.’

If you’re like us and also can’t get enough of Perseus with just one track, don’t worry: you’re in good hands. His label French Express gave away a free EP last December with 3 tracks that are still available right here. Go for it.
