2012 is a year to celebrate for many reasons: the re-election of President Obama, the legalization of gay marriage in three states, surviving Hurricane Sandy, and of, course, the launch of Occupy the Disco. We want to celebrate this monumental year by inviting gay disco lovers to join us for what’s sure to be an incredible night: Holy Ghost!, Midnight Magic, and Juan MacLean are going to ring in the new year with disco and house music at Brooklyn Bowl and we are going to Occupy the Disco! Be sure to RSVP on our Facebook event page to let us know that you’re coming!
Native New Yorkers and childhood friends, Nick Millhiser and Alex Frankel, formed Holy Ghost! in 2007 and quickly became one of the most celebrated nu disco groups around the globe. Signed to DFA Records (home of LCD Soundsystem, The Rapture and many others), they released their debut single that same year, titled ‘Hold On.’ This italo-disco inspired track showcased the duo’s talent in the house music realm and helped establish Holy Ghost! on the forefront of the dance scene. The band then went further, making a huge impact on with their singles ‘It’s Not Over,‘ ‘Wait and See,’ and ‘I Will Come Back’ in addition to massive remixes for Mark Ronson’s ‘Somebody to Love Me‘ and Monarchy’s ‘Love Get Out of My Way.’
After waiting over a year and a half, we finally have new original music from the duo with ‘It Gets Dark.’ While it’s unclear whether the song will be included on Holy Ghost!’s yet-to-be-announced sophomore release, this spooky disco tune serves to remind us that the band is maintaining their elite contemporary house music producer status.
We have talked a lot about one of the most exciting disco acts in New York City, Midnight Magic. We’ve already had the chance to attend their album release party at Cameo Gallery and it was a memorable night to say the least. We’re excited to learn that Tiffany Roth and her disco crew will be opening for Holy Ghost! at Brooklyn Bowl.
Midnight Magic has recently released their debut album, Walking the Midnight Streets, filled with many lush disco tracks, including ‘Beam Me Up’ and ‘I Found Love.’ The LP follows their 2011 EP, What the Eyes Can’t See, which sky-rocketed the 9-piece band into notoriety. Below is a Holy Ghost! re-work Holy Ghost! for one of our favorite tracks on Midnight Magic’s album, ‘Drop Me a Line.’
Both bands are going to be supported by the acclaimed electronic musician, Juan MacLean. Check out his most recent mixtape below.
